Penang

PEOPLE!!!!!!
I have been shamefully neglecting my blog. Haven't had much chance to online properly to update and circumstances did not allow (connection problem and laziness...) I'll skip the bumbling excuses...

----------------------------------

This post should have been up a LOOOOONGG time ago. It has been sitting in my 'Drafts' folder for quite some time.

07/08/2008 - 08/08/2008
I signed up for my college's Accounting and Finance Club (AFC) 's Annual Trip. A two-day-one-night trip to Penang. (Heck,it was too short but better then no trip at all..) I roped in my friends to join too and miraculously, almost all of them put their names down for it;even Bavanee (who's always fretting about "...my mother's/father's/brother's shop!!!") and Preyah (who always excludes herself with "Cannot la...I have to fetch my brothers/mother/cousin!!")

Well,we were supposed to meet in college at 7 a.m. and yours truly acted as the 'alarm clock' and made 'wake-up calls' to the sleepyheads. Everyone was punctual for once (though the bus was not) and we were all settled comfortably in the bus, all hyped up for an awesome, relaxing trip.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Pictures in the bus:-

The last picture above was me holding Bavanee's bag...she made me pose with it for some reason.. =.=" We stopped at McD's for breakfast before heading to Prangin Mall (where Bavanee bought that bag i was posing with). I had the breakfast set;which consisted of the Sausage McMuffin and a cup of coffee. All who ordered coffee agreed that it was totally crappy (it tasted like bitter water). I could not take more than a sip of the coffee let alone take advantage of the 'free refill' (is this some marketing scheme???)
Morning faces

Oh yea, believe it or not..I forgot to bring cash with me on the trip despite carefully planning my luggage. All I can say is THANK GOODNESS for ATM cards and machines!!!!!I discovered my lack of cash during breakfast. But there wasn't much to buy in Prangin Mall anyway. Despite the lack of shopping thrill in there...we created a thrill of our own (unintentionally). I'll tell you about THE ESCAPADE in my next post.It made Joash,Anna,Mei Theng,Christina and me totally sweaty. A picture in the bus after our escapade which involved a 100metre sprint in Penang Town.

We checked into Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel at 2p.m. We had to wait a bit for the keys to our room but nobody minded because the sea breeze was blowing right into the lobby and giving everyone a total lift. Pictures in the lobby:-

I used my shades to hide my squinting eyes.(sea breeze too strong)

The hotel was pretty nice. The beach was directly linked to it...

Everyone was excited about the beach and quickly changed and went back down after getting into our rooms (4 people to a room). We were supposed to meet there for games. A group of us were there early and had a photo session on the sand:-

Everyone grinning into the camera...

Girls only line-up...
but look what was happening behind the scenes.....

It had been some time since I went to a beach and the surroundings were hyping me up...and I was not the only one. Beach games...

#1: Balloon game.
Objective: Burst the balloons on the opponent team's legs. The group with the last one standing wins.

Someone captured this picture of Anna and me looking totally EVIL...
Anna: You take the 5 people on the right and I'll take care of the rest.
Joyce: No problem. They won't stand a chance. HOHOHOHOHO!!!!!!!

#2 Pass the orange
Objective : Using ONLY your necks, pass the orange back and forth in the shortest time. Girls vs Guys.

After games,we went for a swim in the sea...."We are the champions!!!!!"
(Doesn't this picture make you feel like braking out into that Queen's song??)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

My FAVOURITE picture of the trip!!!!!

Well,we only spent one night there. We went to Gurney Drive for dinner and walked in Gurney Plaza. I ate and ate and ate...and got a new pair of shorts in G Plaza. And there was this 'beach party' after we got back to the hotel. But I won't go into detail because i went to bed early. Too exhausted.

The next morning...Checkout time...pretty reluctant to leave.

Time to leave...

Some random picture of me looking like I was about to kill Joash...

Next,we went to this Home for the Blind (damn..I forgot the name). We had to wait a while for the director to meet us and everyone got a little hot and sticky...but some optimistic people manage to make the most our of the wait and let their 'inner-child' out to play...Literally....

We were there to present a cheque on behalf of Sunway College Ipoh to that place. Our current principal, Mr Gobu had arranged the brief visit there.
It was an eye-opener to see how disabled people learn how to take care of themselves and learn skills to get a job and earn their living.

A blind man learning Braille

Rattan weaving....

We also stopped by at this temple but I didn't get down. Mei Theng was entertaining herself by snapping emo pictures of me....
Apparently that was my "I wanna go to QueensBay " face... =.="

Well, nothing much to tell about my shopping spree at QueensBay. I was thrilled with the clothes I got at bargain prices!!!!(And I did NOT go,"Aaaahhhhh!!!!!S-H-O-P-S!!!!!!!" like Joash said, thank you very much...)

Dinner at Bukit Tambun. It was supposed to be seafood but I joined Mei Theng at the 'allergic' table. The food was okay...A group of the students from China were with us on this trip and they were keener on the TV at the restaurant which was showing the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony more than the food. They were patriotic and all stood up when their National Anthem was played on TV.

After dinner, back to the bus and headed for home. Everyone was tired and it was dark and quiet in the bus. Let me show you an interesting photo I took in the bus:-

The ghosts of Yin Yep and Joyce...
(I accidentally turned off the flash)

-----------------------------------
Well,it was over too soon....
A memorable trip which I have tried my best to tell in one post.
I'll end with a silly picture Joash sneakily took of me...(Lesson:don't leave your camera lying around)

Worshipping ass....
(I was hanging my head down because I was too tired)

*Note to Joash-ASS: I updated la!!!!Nyahhh!!!!!!

Stephanie & Shobana's Bash

I have badly neglected my blog and am really really outdated on my posts...
SORRY to all who bother to check my blog!!!!

This post was supposed to have been put up AGES ago...

Anyway...here goes:-

Two July babies..
Shobana and Stephanie celebrated their birthdays on 19/07/2008 and 22/07/2008 respectively.Stephanie's last year as a '-teen' and Shobana reaching the golden key age (21 years old). We decided to celebrated both the girls' birthdays together and hence a little lunch gathering of friends at the Ola-Ola Cafe on the 13th hour of the day in the 22nd day of July...(Okay Okay...I'll stop the funny phrasing...)Even though it was a total last minute thing (I'm not gifted with networking skills) we managed to procure a nice cake for the girls and quite a number turned up to have lunch to mark the celebration. XD

I guess the it really was a special day because things just fell smoothly into place despite me worrying about this and that (I've said before,I don't like last minute outing plans). Ola-Ola was having a birthday offer where there was a discount for birthday celebrations in July (that fact was unknown to me when I picked the place) and although I asked the waitresses to prepare more places at the table than the number I expected to come;last minute participants filled up the extra places..making the number just right. Don't you think God was at work there??

Well, the food there was good and I think everyone enjoyed their orders. After eating...we brought out the nice cake you saw up there and made the birthday girls stand and pose before the cake (ahaha). Photos courtesy of Yin Yep,who went around snapping and snapping pictures. The interior lighting was quite dim so the not-so-many-mega-pixels cameras didn't take very nice photos.

The birthday girls...
Since they were different ages,I couldn't decide how many candles to put and ended up just putting on candle for each...hehehe....Blowing out the candles...
Everyone waiting for a slice of the succuelent cake.... XP
The girls got the nice Ferrero Rocher chocolates....one each. (darn..I was hoping they would forget..ahaha...)

The cake....
BEFORE and AFTER

Pictures pictures pictures.....

(Pssst!!!!!notice what's on Mei Theng's shirt?????)

Someone with Olympic fever.....

Everybody smiling...
And someone trying to look 'cool".... XS

Lastly...my favourite GROUP PICTURE!!!!!
I love the pose Stephanie,Shobana and I unwittingly created...
We look like building blocks...*hahahaha*

-----------------------------------

Oh ya...
I think I'm enjoying showing random pictures at the end of my posts...
I spotted this newly-wedded couple in college...
I think they made a mistake...
This tradition is meant for new husbands bringing the wife to the HOUSE right?????

*Davin and Gerard...you make a sweet couple... XD

Safe in the arms of Jesus

26 July 2008
Saturday, 8 a.m.

I was woken up by my dad's insistent tapping on my bedroom door. I sleep-walked towards the door and opened it with slow,sleep-drugged movements. My parents normally let me have my lie-in on bed during weekends, you see. As soon as the door was unbolted and opened,my dad said in a low, urgent tone :

"Joyce, wake up,you need to pack your things. We have to go back to Klang later. Por-Por has just passed away."
"Okay..."
The news did not fully register in my brain until I had closed the door and sunk into my chair. My maternal grandmother.........................gone. . . . . . .??
Sadness was a very painful feeling at that moment. I stared at the picture of my grandmother which I pinned up two years ago. Was that old lady, whom;in that picture, smiling softly and whose hand I held, really gone??

. . . . . . . . . . .
It was very unexpected. I had thought she was going to stay. After all she had been through...heart attacks, followed by a stroke that left her paralyzed on her left side. She was bedridden, but we all had thought, she would stay with us longer.

I recall my last moments with her. In the hospital, where she was recuperating from the heart attacks, before her stroke. The most vivid in my mind;she was sitting on the bed, eating a bowl of porridge and making small talk with my mother. After that,I was left alone with her to keep her company while the rest of my family went out to lunch. I was never very good at making conversation with her with my limited Chinese vocabulary. But I tried,I enquired about some small bruises on her hand (result of needles) and from there,I ended up holding her hand until she fell asleep. The day after,I had returned Ipoh, with assurance that Por-Por was going to be okay. The doctor had assured us she was fine.

I did not see her when she had a stroke because only my mother rushed there and back. My parents had planned a family trip back to Klang to visit her but before that weekend came, she had breathed her last.

When I reached Klang, the old family house where my grandma stayed looked alien to me. Two temporary dark blue tents were erected at the porch with white banners fluttering from them. I could not read the chinese characters on the banners but this sign shook the calm composure which we had been constructing throughout the 2 and 1/2 hours journey to Klang.

The living room was unrecognizable.
I felt like asking them to clean up everything and return the furniture back to their normal places. But;the next room I went into made me break down completely. My Por-Por's room. Her still body on the bed;my aunts,my mother, around her..sobbing.

I won't describe the events in detail. We (my family members) cried a lot during the two days where wake services were conducted by my grandma's church members, the funeral service and the burial ground. I would like to highlight that I was truly touched at the way my grandma's church members went about doing all they could to help. From advising on the funeral arrangements, helping to find the right people to do what was needed, giving comfort where and when it was needed....and most importantly, that GOD's plan was at work.

I found this double-budded rose (unique because it has two buds) in one of the many wreaths which people offering condolences sent for my grandma's funeral. My grandma loved flowers. I wish i could have shown this to her....
We were mourning...
But this last hymn which was sung at my grandma's wake gave the best reassurance to us.

'Safe in the Arms of Jesus'

  1. Safe in the arms of Jesus,
    Safe on His gentle breast,
    There by His love o'ershaded,
    Sweetly my soul doth rest.
Hark! 'tis a song of heaven
    Borne in the sweetest voice,
    Echoed by saints in spirit,
    Making my heart rejoice.

    • Safe in the arms of Jesus,
      Safe on His gentle breast,
      There by His love o'ershaded,
      Sweetly my soul doth rest.

  2. Safe in the arms of Jesus,
    Safe from corroding care,
    Safe from the world's temptations,
    Sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow,
    Free from my doubts and fears;
    Only a few more trials,
    Only a few more tears.

  3. Jesus, my heart's dear Refuge,
    Jesus has died for me;

  1. Firm on the Rock of Ages
    Ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait with patience,
Wait till the night is o'er,
Wait till I see the morning
    Break on the golden shore

That's where my Por-Por is right now...

Stomach ailment week...

NO
MORE
PAPAYAS
FOR
ME!!!!!

I'm officially declaring papayas as a no-no food for me.
Thanks to three small slices of that orange fruit, yours truly has had to deal with the most horrible stomach ailment in her 19 years of life. I meant to update on the recent birthday party I have been to this week but streamyx seems to be rebelling as hard as my stomach. Uploading the pictures is taking forever,so I shall make use of this chance to take center-stage and do a bit of complaining.

In case your nostrils have been blocked, those of you who are currently residing in Malaysia are surely aware that Durian Season is at it's peak. Majority of the country are gorging themselves on the King of Fruits with no sympathy whatsoever for people like me who are not fans of the thorny,strong-smelling,creamy-yellow fruit. Yes, I cannot stand durians. Call me 'un-Malaysian' or whatever; it will not make me love the fruit. The very SMELL of durians. . . . . (I leave the rest to your imagination).

Since I cannot even stomach the smell of durians,my dad cut a papaya he bought from the market for me on Sunday so that I 'get some fruit into my system'. Oh boy;the fruit really 'got into my system'...it turned my whole digestive system upside down. After eating THREE SMALL PIECES of papayas,my stomach started gurgling. I paid no attention to it because I thought the gurgling could be because I was feeling too full after dinner and dessert. However, the gurgling got my full attention a few hours later when I ran to the bathroom and hurled my entire stomach contents into the toilet bowl. Oh yeah...that was just the beginning of a horrible week.

You might have thought, since I had hurled everything out that night; I should have been okay after a good night's rest. That would have been the ideal happy ending for my story but NOOOOOOOO....I woke up feeling really funny in the stomach. Again, I dismissed the funny feeling as hunger and ate as normal for breakfast and lunch. The whole day was normal, apart from a dull ache in the stomach, I was feeling fine until after dinner. I was back in the same position as yesterday...hurling my guts out at the toilet bowl. (=.=')

To cut a long story short..
I repeated the same scenario two days in a row before finally agreeing to be dragged to the doctor's clinic. Apparently,my stomach is full of wind and the food does not go down properly. So it kind of builds up throughout the day when I eat stuff, and the pressure becomes too much when I eat dinner...so *BOOM*...I run to the toilet and 'worship' the toilet bowl. *Lifts eyes and hands to heaven (sorry God,I did not mean to)*

Well,I have been put on a 'soft diet' on the doctor's instuctions (means no rice,no fried stuff,no heavy stuff,no cheesy wedges, nor ice-cream,nor McD...OH NO!!!!!*SOBS*).At least I'm feeling much better than i was a few days ago. This also explains for my disappearance. The bed has more appeal than the computer appeal when you're feeling totally nauseous.

So...that's all for now.
If you have actually bothered to read this post until here..
Thanks a lot for your concern.
XD
God bless you

If not, MAY LIGHTNING STRIKE YOU FOR BEING SO UNCARING!!!!!!
*Just joking...but you won't know I 'cursed' you since you didn't even read till here. *ahaha!!!*

Awakened from my slumber...

OKAY!!!!

Dearest people...
I'm back from my impromptu deserting of my blog...
Was hit with the 'tired-and-don't-give-a-damn' bug (in short...lazy...*ehem*).

On a serious note...I guess I've been too busy adjusting myself to the changes happening around me that I lost my blogging flow; it suddenly seemed so hard to put my doings into words with many things floating around my mind (I hope I'm making sense...). I'm quite a stickler when it comes to my blog posts (come on...who wants to read blog posts which do not make sense???) and gave up on a few lame attempts to type because I did not want to subject you guys to eye-torture.

Anyway, let me give a quick update on what's been happening around me that need my getting use to. Firstly, things have been pretty tense after what happened to my grandma (re:previous post). Thanks to those of you who have been following up with questions about my grandma. Please keep continue to keep her in prayer as she is still in the recovery process.

Secondly,Sze Haw left to KL to continue her studies in KL. She's been gone two weeks already and I freaking miss her. (Hear that Sze Haw??? "I MISS YOU!!!!!!!") I hate goodbye-s of these sort (I bawled my eyes out last year when everyone left). Perhaps some people might scoff and say I'm over-emotional but if you actually LIKE saying 'goodbye' to someone who's been so close to you..go marry your mirror. That's the only thing which actually has a place in your heart.

Thirdly,I'm finding it quite hard to adjust to my new semester classes after a killer exam in the June '08 sitting and the looming results day (which is going to be bad news for me,I'm pretty sure). If my brain had gears, they desperately need oiling. Everything I previously learn in CAT has leaked out of my head. I can't even recall the basics (some accountant I'm gonna be,huh..) and keeping up with new subjects are proving harder than last semester. Darn.

Complaining finished. Lets move on to cheerier things.
I met up with Charis yesterday. I have not seen this girl for AGES (since she left to Moscow to pursue Med studies) and even though she has been back for more than a month, earlier plans of meeting up had to be put off due to various reasons;at one point,i got scared that I would miss meeting up with her. But THANK GOD,I finally got to see her.

Unlike typical outings,we did not 'meet at the mall'. Our 'reunion' was at the entrance to the DBI public swimming pool.Image Hosted by ImageShack.usSince Charis had some transport problems and it was more convenient for her to come to my place in the morning,I thought,"Why not make use of the early hour and do something healthy??" and I decided to drag her along on my weekly swim. It was a very funny swim. I had made Christina and Preyah promise to come (but Preyah bailed out last minute and spent the time just sitting and watching. X( ) and I think the three of us made the most noise in the swimming pool.
Christina and i tried to persuade Charis to go to the deep end;but we failed'despite our promises that she won't sink and we would save her if she 'drowned'...Charis did not trust us both enough (wise decision on her part???I don't think so).Charis went back with me to my house to shower and get ready to go JJ and we were both exclaiming over our sunburns. My sunblock kept mine to a minimum but Charis swore that she was totally burnt. *haha!!!* We met up with Yin Yep at JJ (We were late..OOPSS!!!!!) and had lunch at Secret Recipe (their RM10 offer is totally worth it..I was so full.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us)
Christina joined us after her movie and we walked around JJ (I was SO TEMPTED by this G2000 hoodie!!!!!!!Self-control!!!!Self-control!!!!Spending limit reached!!!!) and suddenly I had this mad idea to go to Ipoh Parade and Yin Yep actually went along with it and drove us three girls there (kudos to him..he survived as the only guy..*thanks Yin Yep* XD) We wandered into random shops and finally stopped at Easy House to appease my thirst (I was in hyper mode and randomly announced things I wanted and they all just went along with me...so sweet huh??*haha*) Charis and I ordered the two most interestingly named drinks on the menu.Look:-
'Angel in Purple' (mine) and 'Dreams Come True' (Charis's)

They are actually just soda water with a bit of cordial (mine was grape and Charis's was orange). We had a good laugh over the drinks name and whether Charis's sip of 'Dreams Come True' really made her dreams come true. (Pretty ironic huh). After drinks,Yin Yep dropped us back at JJ (he had to prepare for work) and we lingered for my Cheesy Wedges and left after that. Christina was like so sleepy and i think she was so glad when I dropped her off at home *haha*. Charis followed me home to wait for her dad there and we had a really nice, long chat catching up. We did not do much but it was such a FUN day.

------------------------------------------

OK...
I'm not turning this into my blog custom..
but since I've been MIA,I'll just so random pictures to fill up the missing chunks.

I saw this rainbow while waiting to pick up my brother from tuition..
First time I ever saw such a clear rainbow and captured it on my mobile.

I went for another of my 'once-in-a-blue-moon' haircuts.Only, this time I just asked the guy to 'tidy-up' my hair.

BEFORE
*screams of terror*

AFTER
* =.=" *

Liane came back for the previous weekend and she bought a new baby to her family:-

MAXIMUS
(the name she gave me..I don't know if he's still Maxie)

Isn't he ADORABLE??????
Exactly like my toy doggie...
I know you're going, "awwwwWWWW!!!!"

And I Shobana shared a picture of her fatty hammies!!!!!!

All these pictures of cute animals make me totally MISS my hamsters!!!!!!!
DARN!!!!!

Well people, this has been a long post...
I promise to be more consistent from now on.
Update soon..

:)

It never rains;but it pours.

Hello to all who have bothered to check my blog.
I'm afraid I've been wasting your good efforts.
Sorry.

To be honest, the past two weeks have been rough.

And it's not just coping with my new semester and a few changes that have been happening..
One of the things I try NOT to do in my blog is to write posts which are sad. However, let me break my resolution for now. I'm tired of putting up a happy front. Just so tired..

My maternal grandma had heart attack.
And barely a week after her condition stabilized from the attack, she suffered a serious stroke. She is still in the hospital. I do not know exactly what is her condition now but I do know that she really had go through a lot of pain;and life is not going to be easy for her from now on. When she had her first serious heart attack,my aunt called and my whole family packed and rushed back to Klang at 5 a.m. in the morning. We stayed and spent time with her for a few days and went back to Ipoh after assuring ourselves that she seemed to be none worse after the attack.

I'm growing to dread the times when my house phone rings;or when my mobile rings with the caller ID showing its my Klang cousin.
On Thursday morning, the phone rang and bad news came. My dad answered the phone because I was still in my room. The news really stunned me because I had thought my grandma would be alright. My mum rushed back from work and announced she was driving down to Klang immediately. My dad had to work,my brother was in school and I was about to leave for my first class. My mum had to make the trip alone. Perhaps it was a good thing I had to be in college. Other things demanded my focus and my cousin updated me through sms.

I can tell you that there were times where I felt my emotional chords being stretched to a breaking point. I can't imagine what my Mum must have felt. It was her mum hovering between life and death on that hospital bed, hooked with tubes and a cardiac monitor.

Thank you God for sparing my grandma.
Please keep my grandma and my family in prayer.

To those who have been in the know and have been following up with concerned questions about my grandma, provided me with the optimistic support, prayer and sympathy that was needed at that time;thank you very much. Thank you for showing that you love me.
I love you guys.
