My beloved paper friends

I LOVE READING!!!!
I LOVE BOOKS!!!!!

I've suddenly been seized by the urge to talk about my favourite obsession.

Even before i learnt how to read, I'd love books.
My mum would tell anybody how I'd hold a book in front of my face just looking at it quietly when i was barely 2 years old.

Fast forward,I'm 18 this year...I was looking at the bookshelf in my room and I thought,"Whoa, how much DID I spend on all these???"

Of course not ALL of them are from my own allowance...some are gifts from my family and friends. THANK YOU Mummy,Papa,Yee-Ma,Yee-Yee,Samantha and Jeraldyne!!!!!
Over the years,I've graduated from Enid Blyton's works(I was pretty obsessed with Famous Five series and refused to read anything else) to just about any interesting title that comes my way.
I firmly believe that my passion for books has something to do with my poor eyesight. Darn those spectacles on my nose!!!
Decent books are getting more and more expensive...and I had to dig DEEP into my pockets to fuel my favourite past-time. And this week.i spent over a 100 bucks on books!!!Three months of savings gone in a blink...but its worth it!!!I completed my Harry Potter collection!!YAY!!!
Although J.K Rowling's style went from witty and richly detailed to brooding and dusty lovey-dovey from the first book to the seventh(which came out just last week);I really liked her imagination and her ability to come up with such good plots, settings and some pretty nail-nibbling suspense. I won't pretend that some parts of the books didn't bore me but J.K Rowling made up for them with her plot twists and some pretty touching stories about the characters' pasts. Harry Potter books have been burning holes in my pockets since 2005 but I have no regrets whatsoever. However,in my opinion;although her books are classified as "suitable for all ages",only books 1 to 4 are suitable for children.Books 5 to 7 are not suitable for under 13-s. They contain too many ideas about death, fighting evil with evil and struggles for power.
Other than Harry Potter,I've also started reading hilarious books;more known as "chick flicks".I've been trying to chase the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella(her latest book is 'Shopaholic and Baby') but they're sadly out of my reach. The local bookstores here are SO SLOW in stocking up with the paperbacks!!! But I've been having more luck with Maggie Alderson books. She has written four books so far and I have three of them:I've been hunting for her book "Mad About the Boy" for a year now!!!!
"Cents and Sensibility" and "Mad About the Boy" have very good humour in them and plenty of eccentric characters. Perfect for light reading. I bought "Handbags and Gladrags" just yesterday in a second-hand bookstore. Haven't finished reading it yet.
Those are my recently purchased reading material. Among my collection is the Lord of the Rings trio(the movies were more exciting),several classics("Arabian Nights","What Katy Did" series and "Little Women" are my favourites),a few manga comics and the random love novels and "Roots";a great book by Alex Haley about his ancestry.
Sad to say, reading is getting to be a really expensive hobby. I feel very privileged each time I leave a bookstore with a purchase in my hand. Some of my friends have pointed out that I could have spent the money on several good shopping trips. I love shopping as much as any girl, but the feeling I get each time I curl up on my bed with a good book definitely beats any shopping trip.

Live A Life That Matters

I was looking through my folders and I found this. I used to have this pinned to the front of my file. A friend once commented that its pretty morbid for someone who isn't even 20. Well,it tweaked my mind..read and see if it tweaks yours.

Live A Life That Matters

Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.

All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived,
at the end.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant

Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got,
but what you gave.

What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters.

Hair Raisers

Ghost Stories....

We are all suckers for these..

Even if you swear that you don't believe in the supernatural, you can never resist picking up your ears when the topic comes up.

Whether in broad daylight or around campfires....

I've heard my share of creepy stories during my 11 years in middle school and then high school. You name it..toilet ghouls, tree ghosts, murderous banshee, friendly ghosts. I do not believe in ghosts.. BUT i believe there are spirits and demons (because the Bible contains some stories bout them..) I've listened to all those stories with mild apprehension. Some are downright ridiculous and most are not worth repeating. But there are a few which have succeeded in giving sceptical-me the shivers...particularly because they were told by my friends who are not habitually superstitious.

Read on.
I'm not guarantee-ing you'll be chilled too.I'm merely sharing the story OK? :)

THE BOOKWORM

The school library isn't much different from other libraries. Perhaps the only thing that sets it apart from other libraries is the fact that every piece of furniture there;tables, chairs, shelves, is made out of wood and very, VERY old.(The school itself is over 100 years old).

Somehow,I never liked going to the back part of the library. It didn't LOOK different from the rest of the library, but it FELT different. I get this really cold feeling whenever I'm there;like I've accidentally intruded into some one's place. I never gave much thought to it and dismissed it with logical explanations....until one day,i casually told my friend about it. And she related this story to me:

One day;many years ago,a student librarian in had stayed back until evening for co-curricular activities in the school. She left her things in the library counter (Librarians were allowed to do so). When her club meeting was over, she went back up to the library to collect her things, but the library had already been closed because the teacher in charge had left. So,the librarian went to the office to get the key to unlock the library.

Having obtained the key,she let herself into the library and went to collect her things from behind the counter. Before she went out, she took a glance around the library and she saw another girl sitting at the back of the library, reading a book. It never occurred to the librarian something strange was going on. She called out to the girl,"Hey,I'm going to go out and I'm locking the library, are you following me?" The girl slowly raised her head from the book and smiled at her. By then, the librarian had realised something was really, REALLY wrong. She fled out of the library, slammed the door and padlocked it. She was so afraid that she waited with the clerk in the office instead of the bus stop for her ride home.

The next day, the librarian asked the teacher in charge,"Was anyone accidentally locked in the library yesterday?". "No..nobody."

LADY IN RED
Many people talked about the the lady in a red dress that haunted the school. Even the school guard claimed that he saw her wandering around the grounds during his night shifts. I always "hmph-ed" loudly whenever stories about Red Lady surfaced. Somehow, ghosts always seem to have long hair hanging down her back and wear long dresses. Typical. Until my friend, T,a senior, related what she saw on the night of her graduation party in school:

Graduation parties were chances for us to shed out of the school uniforms and let down our hair. Every girl who attended the graduation party dressed up in nice outfits. T's friend, M, went in a red dress and she had long,waist-length hair which she left loose. The party that night was almost over when T and two other friends decided to take a walk around the school;since they would be leaving and most likely won't be back for a long time.

So the three of them walked, laughing and enjoying the cool night breeze. They were approaching the 3rd Form classes when they saw what appeared to be M at a corner. M was walking down the classrooms corridor in front of them. T and her friends thought M was also taking a walk around the school too and decided to join her. They tried to approach her but M was ahead of them. She walked further away and didn't appear to her them calling her. She turned another corner and went out of view. T and her friends decided M might want to be alone and headed back to the hall where the party was still going on,quite a distance from where they had walked.

When they walked into the hall, the first person they saw was M;in deep conversation with a friend. T and her two friends were pretty shocked. They went up to M and said,"Wow,how did you get back here so fast?" M looked rather confused and said,"I didn't leave the hall at all. What do you mean?" M's friend confirmed what she said. T and her friends were very shocked by then...
Who was that person in the red dress with long hair, walking right in front of them...if it wasn't M??

Well, these are the two stories which creeped me..
What do YOU think about them
You may not believe in ghosts like me...but it is advisable to have a healthy respect for the unknown and
DO NOT DABBLE WITH THE SUPERNATURAL.

Pizza Fiasco

Don't we all love pizza??
Its just nice to bite into that cheese covered,meat-topped baked dough....mmm..

WELL..
you must be wondering why i put Pizza Fiasco as the title...
Let me tell you the story:-

Two weeks ago,my cousin;SH and I decided to have pizza for lunch. Since this pizza place had quite a good lunch promotion going on,we headed there n settled in a nice, cozy booth at a corner of that restaurant. We placed our orders (a plate of spaghetti and meatballs for SH and a pizza for me) and started yakking about random things.

Somewhere between topics,i noticed a mini sign on our table proudly declaring that our orders will be served in "15 minutes or RM 5 off your next order!". We started grinning looking at our watches. It was 1:15 pm. Just for fun,we started to time how long for our orders to reach our table. The pizza place wasn't very full. SH n me made up 2 out of 6 customers in that place. So we waited.....

1:23 pm
A waitress appeared at our table with a plate of spaghetti. I thought,"Not bad...they took 8 minutes to serve that spaghetti." So i sat up expectantly, waiting for my pizza. SH stared at her spaghetti n exclaimed, "HEY!!there're no meatballs in this!". "Never mind..we'll ask the waitress when my pizza comes."

A few minutes later, the another waitress approached my table n set down.....
a platter of seafood dip.
"Huh?This doesn't look like pizza.." I thought. I told the waitress she made a mistake. She took back that platter, looking rather confused. She didn't even notice SH gesturing at her, trying to bring up the missing meatballs.
I looked at my watch....1:25 pm.

I waited some more for my pizza. By the time a waitress approached our table again, it was 1:35pm. SH had eaten half her spaghetti(which was cold) and I was frowning(I was seriously hungry by then). The waitress said to me, "Miss, you are going to have to wait for your pizza because we made the wrong order for you earlier." My eyebrow went up. OK..since they're obviously taking more then 15 minutes to serve my order,i'm entitled to RM5 off my next order right? Remember that nice mini sign sitting on my table??

So i picked up the mini sign n told the waitress that, pointing at the sign. Her eyes grew BIG when she heard what i was saying and she said to me, "Miss, its not that your pizza isn't ready, its half cooked, one side is done now we're waiting for the other side!"
(Seriously, those were her words....and i didn't understand what she was trying to say..do you?)
I said,"I thought you said you served the wrong order??"
Waitress,"Oh,no.Your pizza is in the oven now."
This was getting weird....i had to get us back on track.

The waitress (lets call her Ms W), was the same one who served the spaghetti so SH quickly asked about the missing meatballs while i was thinking of what to say.
Their conversation:
Ms W replied, "Oh,your meatballs WERE in that spaghetti when we served it!"
SH (frowning slightly), "No,i definitely didn't see any meatballs. There was only sauce."
Ms W, "Your meatballs were in the sauce!!We minced them and put them in the sauce with your spaghetti!"

Read the bold part..minced meatballs....
MINCED MEATBALLS!!!!!
For crying out loud who serves meat-BALLS MINCED???!!!

SH decided to drop it. So she gestured towards me to let me continue my RM5 claim.
I said,"Miss,I don't care whether my pizza is in the oven, half cooked or whatever..the point is,you're taking more then 15 minutes to serve it. So i want my RM5 rebate. Is that okay?"
Miss W, "Okay."
Me,"I want the menu please."

I didn't particularly want that rebate but i was annoyed and HUNGRY. Hunger doesn't bring out the best in me...that was why i fought for that RM5. So i ordered another dish that was less than RM5 n i shared it with SH (My pizza arrived with that extra dish). We ate happily.

You might think that this is the end of the story..but WAIT. Continue reading.

We called for the bill. Being the touchy accounting student,i scrutinised the bill. HA!! I knew it!!! The RM 5 wasn't taken off the bill. I waved at Miss W. She appeared and i pointed that out to her. She took it and said,"Oh Miss, your RM 5 isn't cut off from the bill. You only get a RM 5 meal voucher." and she handed me a voucher.

.............

Ok..i've got a voucher...
I said,"Well,i wanna use the voucher now. So you can go take RM 5 off the bill."
Miss W, "I'm sorry but you cannot use the voucher now. You can only use it in a different bill or another day."

NOW...all this while,i've been talking pleasantly to her even though i was annoyed. But this made me see RED.

SH noticed my darkening face. Being a true law student, she grabbed the voucher and mini sign, turned it over and started reading the terms and conditions.I've seldom seen SH angry but her face had a tiger-ish expression when she looked up at Miss W after reading.
She said,"I don't see any term and condition stating what you said."

Flusterred, the waitress grabbed the voucher and scribbled something on the bill. I wasn't satisfied so i asked her to print a new bill because i knew tax and service charge should have different figures after the RM 5 rebate. Sure enough, when the new bill came,it was RM 6 lesser than what we were supposed to pay in Bill 1.

We left that pizza place vowing to boycott it. About a dozen steps away from that place, SH caught my eye...and we both burst out laughing because we saw the funny side at the same time...

It must have been the waitress' unlucky day. The day she tried to manipulate her unhappy customers, she choose to do it on an Accounting and Law student..

so what do you think of my first post?
funny or lame??
